Kamakura Period Series: Overview INTRODUCTION

As data in the Corpus of Historical Japanese, we have made public the data for five works in the “Kamakura Period Series, Volume I: Folktales and Essays” corpus, five works in the “Kamakura Period Series, Volume II: Diaries and travel literature” corpus, and three works in the “Kamakura Period Series, Volume III: Military Chronicles” corpus.

We have established a link from the Corpus of Historical Japanese, Kamakura Period Series (Volume I: Folktales and Essays) to the Shinpen Nihon Koten Bungaku Zenshū (Shōgakukan) in JapanKnowledge.
From any entry in the list of examples in the search results from the online search application Chunagon, it is now possible to jump directly from the Corpus of Historical Japanese, Kamakura Period Series (Volume I: Folktales and Essays) to the corresponding page in the Shinpen Nihon Koten Bungaku Zenshū in JapanKnowledge, which contains the source text, a Modern Japanese translation, and footnotes. Users can refer to translations and notes while they analyze Classical Japanese language through corpora.

With regard to the Konjaku Monogatarishū, in addition to JapanKnowledge, we have provided links to the Suzuka Text version of the Konjaku Monogatarishū from the Kyoto University Library Repository and the Konjaku Monogatari Collection from the Jissen Women's University Repository. Users can compare entries in the list of examples in the search results with reproductions of the corresponding texts.

Presentations of research results using the Corpus of Historical Japanese must include a citation taking the general form of the example below (with appropriate modifications depending on the version and the date of access):

Military Chronicles (Kamakura Period Series, Volume III)

Overview

Three works from among the military epics of the Kamakura Period are assembled here: the “Hogen monogatari”, the “Heji monogatari”, and the “Heike monogatari”. Being representative examples of “和漢混淆文 (wakan konkōbun ‘Japanese Chinese mixed style’)” writing, these three works are understood as being crucial materials for research in the history of the Japanese language.
